This book is full of good info, but is a bit difficult to decipher the math.
I found the math sections very clear and understandable, but I am something of a math brain so maybe that's just me. I bought this book when I first started playing poker seriously, and still refer back to it from time to time. It lays out the ideas behind some basic and intermediate poker strategies, and explains very nicely all the math behind pot odds, implied odds, etc. I've also since learned simpler methods of calculating odds to hit an out than his DIPO method laid out in the book. But overall, I'd highly recommend this book to any beginners or advanced beginners, and even regular players who want a refresher on the theories behind the moves we tend to make so routinely.
The title of this book, "Weighing the Odds in Hold'em Poker", is highly misleading.The book only pertains to limit Hold'Em. Usually, the phrase "hold'em" only means no-limit, or perhaps both limit and no limit. The word "hold'em" in a book title does not mean "only limit hold'em". There is no indication, at the time of this writing, in the editors' description on Amazon that this book only pertains to limit hold'em.
It is not entertaining. I have read better books regarding the probabilities pertinent to poker. It is not useful for making decisions in the game of poker. I was searching for these better books when I came across this weak book. This terrible book has no merit. The author merely wants to have a book on the market. I advise you to look elsewhere for a book about the probabilities pertinent to winning at poker.
And that's exactly what I was looking for. If you are looking for the down and dirty numbers behind poker, and I am not talking about tables of numbers to memorize but the actual formulas that those tables are derived from, this is the book for you. Reading this book makes my head hurt, and probably should be done sitting at a desk with a pen and paper. Not only do you want to take notes, you will also want to be sure you can work through what Yao is explaining.It is a wonderful read if that is what you are looking for.
